In this step-by-step tutorial, you are going to learn how to create this folded paper or step text effect in Adobe Illustrator. Also, we will use Adobe Photoshop for final touches. It is most appropriate for an intermediate level. So, let’s get into it!

1. Create a background.

At first, go to the rectangle tool, click once to the artboard to create a dialogue box. Write the size of your artboard to create a background in the same size.

Then align it to the artboard. You can do it easily with the Align Panel. ( Windows – Align – Horizontal align center – Vertical align center. Make sure “Align to artboard” is selected.) Then lock the background layer, and create a new layer. We are going to create artwork on that layer.

2. Create the text.

Go to Type tool, write any word you wish. Make it white, change the font to Roboto Black. Adjust font size according to your artboard size. Mine was about 600 px. Then select the text, go to Type -> Create Outline.

3. Split the text.

Firstly, make a rectangle above the text with the same height as it. Select the rectangle and go to Object -> Path -> Split Into Grid. It will open a diologue box. Make Rows Number 5 and press OK.

Then select both text and the rectangle, go to Window -> Pathfinder -> Divide. Ungroup the object (Shift + Ctrl + G) . Now they are all separate pieces.

Now clean the unwanted pieces. Select each row separately, and group (Ctrl + G).

4. Give it an isometric look!

Select the 1st, 3rd and 5th rows (groups) and go to Effect -> 3D ->Rotate. Select Rotation -> Isometric Top, then press OK.

Then select the 2nd and 4th rows and go to the same place. But this time, select Isometric Left, and before pressing OK, change Surface to Diffuse Shading. Make ambient light approximately 70-75%. In the end, adjust the pieces to look better.

5. Final touch.

Before jumping to Photoshop, select the object, go to Object -> Expand appearance. Select all artwork and group. Then copy it with Ctrl + C and open Photoshop. In Photoshop, create a new document of the same size as Adobe Illustrator artboard. First, create a black background. Then paste the artwork to the new layer with Ctrl + V.

Right-click the Vector Smart Object layer and Rasterize layer. Go to edit -> Perspective. And transform it as you wish, make it look perspective.

In order to give some texture, go to Filter -> Noise -> Add Noise. I think, 6-8 Amount of Noise is OK, but it is up to you.

Finally, it is done! hope you enjoyed it.
